In 2003, a new Masterplan was created for Brisbane Girls Grammar School. As part of that plan, The Cherrell Hirst Creative Learning Centre was conceived and built in 2007. This unique building now provides our girls with a range of music, art, creative technology and social facilities designed to improve the quality of education which the School is able to deliver to its students, now and in the future. The next component of the Masterplan to be implemented is the new swimming pool.
The old pool
On Saturday 15 October 1960, Sir James Holt KB officially opened Brisbane Girls Grammar School’s first swimming pool. It was a momentous event in that for the first time in its history, the School had its own facility for its girls to learn to swim, become proficient in lifesaving and play water sports.
The following archival footage circa 1961 shows the School, our students and the then “new” pool in use.
The new pool
It is proposed that a 25m curriculum pool with depths to accommodate water polo training will be constructed on the existing running track next to the McCrae Grassie Sports Centre.
Not only will the pool be used by water polo players, the largest sporting group in the School, and our swimming teams, but it will also be used for life saving classes, an indispensable skill for the Australian lifestyle.
The pool will replace the one built in 1960 and its positioning between the Creative Learning Centre and the Sports Centre will permit students to make full use of the existing sports facilities. The combination of the tennis courts, Sports Centre and pool will identify this area as the sporting hub of the School and enhance the concept of sport and health as a vital part of a Girls Grammar education.
From the Chair and the Principal
"The challenge of the Board of Trustees has always been to ensure that our Principal and staff are fully resourced and enabled to explore, research and deliver the highest standard of education for young women." Ms Elizabeth Jameson, Chair, Board of Trustees
The construction of the pool, together with all its associated infrastructure including seating, shade, surrounds, heating and retaining wall, will cost approximately $2m. The Board of Trustees has already allocated $1.5m towards this cost and is seeking $500,000 in philanthropic contributions from the Girls Grammar community.
