I am delighted to advise that the Year 11 girls have elected Sarah Miller and Lili Wackwitz to be Head Girls of Brisbane Girls Grammar School in 2016.

The achievements we acknowledged at Assembly this week could not have been accomplished without confronting some hardship and challenge. Our girls should be proud of their courage in the face of struggles and enjoy the happy times too – they are both important elements in our life.

Last week at Assembly as we discussed the anticipation and excitement of Open Day preparations, I spoke with staff and girls about ‘Lists’ and we considered how important they were to achieving all that we set out to achieve. I felt certain that lists were important in their preparations for Open Day.

A Year 9 girl told me yesterday, ‘I really like NAPLAN. I find it’s a good way to track how I’m going with my general knowledge as a student, shows where I need to improve and it’s reassuring to know how I am tracking against other students in Australia.’ This week our Year 7 and Year 9 students, along with approximately one million Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 completed their 2015 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assessments.

Being a mother, however challenging the daughter or the circumstances at times, is ultimately a tender, meaningful and joyful experience. Being a mother, however wonderful the daughter, is also hard, fraught and often downright exhausting. Mothers’ Day this Sunday celebrates and honours our mothers, the broader concept of motherhood and the importance and influence of mothers in society.
