A Sense of Wonder in Year 5 Science
This week’s Year 5 Science Lab session was filled with awe and discovery as Year 5 students continued their exploration of Chemical Science and States of Matter. We were delighted to welcome a special visitor, Mr Brinin from the Senior School laboratory team, who used a powerful microscope to reveal soot particles - the tiny solid carbon particles found in smoke. As the particles came into focus, the girls erupted with gasps and pure amazement. Seeing something normally invisible suddenly come to life was a moment of genuine scientific wonder.
The sense of wonder continued as students moved into small groups to use microscopes themselves—an exciting first experience for many. They focused their lenses on pollen particles, adjusting the magnification until intricate structures snapped into view. This experience wasn’t about data tables or reports; it was about curiosity, joy, and the thrill of discovering hidden worlds. The excitement in the room made it clear that our young scientists are developing a deep, lasting love for exploring how matter behaves at its smallest level.
