Giving Day opens the door to a new Fitness Centre in 2026

Brisbane Girls Grammar School's Giving Day this year will directly support the construction of a new Fitness Centre to strengthen a commitment to wellbeing and sporting excellence at the School.

Construction is set to begin in 2026 on the facility, which will inspire Grammar girls with panoramic views to the site of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Stadium.

Chair, Board of Trustees, Ms Julie McKay said prioritising a `fit for purpose’ new centre recognised growing awareness of the broader benefits of physical activity for all students, not just athletes.

`We all understand the important link between exercise, good mental health and success at School and beyond,’ Ms McKay said.

Girls Grammar has long recognised this link, becoming the first secondary girls’ school in Queensland to appoint a full time PE teacher in 1944. Since then, it has continued to significantly expand and upgrade its sporting programs and facilities.

`The current BGGS Fitness Centre is inadequate and was last updated in the 1990s,’ Ms McKay said.

`Our new Fitness Centre will provide all students with access to a transformative space to train, stay active and cultivate lifelong habits of health and wellbeing. It strengthens our commitment to the holistic wellbeing of Grammar girls and sporting excellence for our athletes.’

Using existing spaces more effectively

The new Fitness Centre has been designed to harness underutilised space, positioned beneath the Main Campus pool. Floor to ceiling windows will maximise natural light and views to the Olympic Stadium site, with a flexible floorplan to allow for multiple uses.

The facility has been conceptualised by m3architecture, who envisioned many of the School’s landmark buildings, including the award-winning Cherrell Hirst Creative Learning Centre, the Science Learning Centre, and the new Brisbane Girls Grammar School Junior School.

Principal Ms Jacinda Euler Welsh extends her thanks to the BGGS community for their enthusiastic and generous support in the lead-up to Giving Day.

`In our sesquicentenary year, we celebrate the past but also look to the future as we continue to build on a legacy of excellence in education. Now, more than ever, that includes nurturing both mind and body.

`Your generosity can transform a Grammar girl’s future and inspire her to give her best.’
