Science Spotlight On... Pathogen Transmission

Inspired by the work of 19th century doctor Ignaz Semmelweis, Year 9 Biology students explored how effective handwashing by doctors in childbirth reduced the transmission of disease and decreased mortality rates.

The students used glow gel to model pathogen transmission, working in groups to test five different handwashing methods—from not washing at all to washing with soap and water for the length of the Happy Birthday song. Viewing their hands under UV light clearly demonstrated to the girls how proper handwashing reduces the spread of disease, and the students’ disgusted reactions confirmed they are now committed to keeping their hands squeaky clean.
