Sights, Sounds, Stories
On Wednesday, the Year 9 artists and musicians presented Sights, Sounds, Stories. This special event celebrated the girls’ artistry and creativity, showcasing artwork inspired by the unique architecture of our local Spring Hill community, alongside original songs written and performed by the students.
The evening would not have been possible without the girls’ wonderful aural and visual creations, and we thank the parents for joining us to celebrate their daughters’ achievements and for supporting their learning in Art and Music.
Ruby Hill (8O) welcomed the students and parents to the event with this speech below:
The Arts, it has been said, 'cannot change the world. But they may change human beings who might change the world.’
These words, spoken by Maxine Greene, remind us why we’re gathered here today. When she said them, I doubt she envisioned a high school music and art showcase as the context, but her message feels especially relevant tonight, as we come together to celebrate our connection through the Arts.
Good evening parents, friends, students and teachers. My name is Ruby Hill and I’m so grateful to be welcoming you all to our Sights, Sounds and Stories showcase tonight. Thank you for being here to witness and support this journey.
Tonight, we are gathered here to show you all the wonderful learning and creating we've done as a cohort. We celebrate the power of creation and the courage it takes to put our work on display.
While writing this speech, I asked some of my peers what music and art mean to them. One described music as a sanctuary— a relief from the stresses of life. Another shared that art is a safe space for her to express emotions and creativity without judgment. Both of these subjects are my two personal favourites. I truly believe the Arts have a way to reach into our inner worlds, and offer us tools to process, express and share who we are.
Each piece you’ll experience tonight represents more than just notes on a page or strokes on a canvas, you're experiencing an incredible emotional and artistic expression of the voices of young creators. Thank you again for being here, and enjoy your night.
