A Strong Sisterhood: From the Chair of the Board of Trustees

While challenging in so many ways, the last two years have caused me to reflect deeply on the importance of strong community connection.

It is this connection that unites the Girls Grammar community—and as our 2021 Head Girls write in their Bishbar Blue article, sisterhood within the School is more prevalent, more visible, than ever.

This year, like its predecessor, we have had to be creative with how we connect. From remote learning and students creating ‘virtual picnics’ to catch up with one another during quarantine, to hosting Grammar Women webinars—we have genuinely adapted to find new and unique ways to connect meaningfully and lift each other’s spirits.

However, the opportunities to be together and celebrate the achievements of our girls and the impact of a BGGS education were also highlights.

Our very first Giving Day was an enormous success, raising $438 500 to give the gift of a Girls Grammar education to girls who would not otherwise be able to attend our School. Thank you to those alumnae who gave on this day—as Grammar Women, we know first-hand how far reaching a BGGS education is, and we look forward to giving that gift to many more deserving young women.

I was pleased to deliver an address at this year’s Annual Speech Day and Distribution of Prizes Ceremony, in person, with our entire school community in attendance. One of the topics I chose to highlight in my speech was the importance of friendship.

Female friendships are critical in building strong women who support each other, challenge each other and protect each other. Throughout their education at BGGS, students are taught to develop critical thinking, form strong opinions, and learn how to debate those opinions. They are prepared to face injustice and know how to stand up against it. One of the most important tools they have is the support they can provide for one another, support that will inspire them to forge successful paths. I feel grateful every day to have enduring friendships from my time at BGGS.

For the students making the transition from Grammar girls to Grammar Women—and those in our community who have made that journey a number of years ago—I hope you carry those important friendships with you.

I extend the deepest gratitude to our alumnae for another wonderful year. I hope you and your family enjoy a restful, relaxing holiday.
