Connections for Life: From The President of the Old Girls Association

From time to time, I am asked what is the purpose of the Old Girls Association (OGA) and whether it is still relevant to have such a group—after all, ‘old girls’ isn’t really how many of our alumnae see themselves!

Much like Girls Grammar, the OGA prides itself on our longevity and steadfast traditions, and maintains a strong and purposefully engaged community that shares a belief in the importance of educating girls. Founded in 1899 on the ideals of loyalty, friendship, shared journeys and sisterhood, the OGA continues to strengthen relationships between Grammar Women and such ideals still ring true today. Our motto, Connections for Life, is an apt description—Grammar sisters are invited into an organisation of Grammar Women whey they are able to create and maintain relationships for life.

Bringing together the past and present while looking to the future, the OGA is a passionate group of alumnae of all ages—our youngest member is 21 and our oldest has just turned 80. We are committed to fostering connections between past students, and providing a framework for Grammar Women to stay connected, celebrating the achievements of past students, and instilling in current students the benefits of such a strong ‘sisterhood’.

All Grammar Women automatically become part of the association upon graduating. You may wish to attend the School’s regular Grammar Women networking events, usually held every few months or perhaps your reunion, held every 10 years, to reconnect with your classmates. Whatever level of involvement you choose, you will always be part of our Girls Grammar family.

Reunions are always very special events and many past students return to the School’s Main Campus each year to attend their reunion. When members of the OGA Committee welcome these women through the gates, it is always heartening to hear about the lifelong friendships made at our School. In my own personal experience, some of my dearest friends and fondest memories have come from my time at Girls Grammar. As President of the OGA, it is a privilege to continue to meet so many interesting Grammar Women through OGA events and activities.
