The Drama Studio—Semester 1 Report

Artist in Residence: The Good Room

Across 10 afternoon sessions, the Drama Studio collaborated with award-winning Brisbane theatre company, The Good Room, to devise and perform a piece of theatre about our world. The process started with a short survey of questions about events in history that we resonated with, and then we were asked for thoughts, questions and advice about our past and the future.

Drama Studio participants responded anonymously, their answers were collected, and their words became the stimulus of the script we have today. The ensemble members dived into the process with enthusiasm and creativity. They bravely shared some of their deepest thoughts and experiences and respectfully loaned their voices to the raw, powerful, funny and honest words that emerged. ‘History May Repeat’ reflects on the (often grim) past, grapples with and revels in the present, and punches into the future with passion and optimism.

Artist in Residence: Noa Rotem

In this series of masterclass sessions facilitated by guest artist, Noa Rotem, students were introduced to practices and techniques that enabled opportunities to develop their performance skills. Framed within the context of physical theatre training, a range of exercises were used to:

  • develop ensemble awareness and movement
  • create physically dynamic and energised performances
  • allow participants to make interesting and truthful choices onstage
  • deepen trust in imagination and physical impulses
  • increase capacity to collaborate and to play onstage.

We look forward to inviting new members across Years 7 to 12 to the Semester 2 Drama Studio, on Thursday afternoons from 3.30 – 5 pm on Level 3 of the Creative Learning Centre. Keep an eye out on Minerva for program updates, but for now, we hope to see you on Thursday 14 July.

Thank you, Noa and The Good Room for an amazing artist-filled semester!

Have a safe and restful holiday.
