Women in Sport event

On Thursday evening, eight current and newly elected Sports Captains attended the inaugural Brisbane State High School Women in Sport event. The night was designed to celebrate the success of past QGSSSA students and inspire the current and next generation of athletes.

The panel of guest speakers were all elite sportswomen and QGSSSA alumnae—Renee Taylor (Hockey), Bronte Barrett (Swimming), Madeline Groves (Swimming), Jacinta Beecher (Athletics) and BGGS alumna, Kirby Short (2003, Cricket). Every athlete had an inspirational message specific to their career but also spoke about the fond memories of the traditions and experiences they had experienced when involved in QGSSSA sport.

The highlight for the BGGS students was the message from alumna, Kirby Short—‘never be satisfied … you can always choose to be better’ when on your sport journey. This message resonated with the students. This is what drove Kirby to excel in many sports and led her on her sporting journey that culminated in captaining the Brisbane Heat to consecutive cricket WBBL titles.

A fantastic evening of inspiring stories and messages from each panel member is something the BGGS captains will be able to draw on as they continue their sporting journeys.
