The QGSSSA introduced AFL to Year 7 to 11 students during Term 4 in a trial format. There was great interest, with approximately 75 girls taking up the opportunity to learn a new sport.
AFL Queensland Staff led a series of skill development sessions over two Friday afternoons, in preparation for the two QGSSSA AFL Gala Days featuring modified games.
The skills sessions were held at Rangakarra, Fig Tree Pocket, with girls from Brisbane Girls Grammar School and St Peters Lutheran College. Players learned the fundamental skills of AFL, including handballing, kicking and fielding ground balls.
Students then put their skills to the test at Everton Park Wolves JAFC over two Friday afternoons. The girls played nine-a-side games against Somerville House, with teams comprising of Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11s.
It has been an exciting opportunity for our students who have shown genuine interest and ability in AFL. We are looking forward to 2022, and future AFL opportunities through QGSSSA. Thank you to the staff and coaches who facilitated the sessions by assisting AFL Queensland staff.
