Australian of the Year, Ms Taryn Brumfitt, to present to Year 7/8 students

We are delighted to welcome 2023 Australian of the Year, Ms Taryn Brumfitt, to our School virtually for a screening and Q&A of her movie, Embrace Kids, on Thursday 23 February.

Taryn is passionate about campaigning for greater resources to address body image issues among teenaged children. Her decade-long campaign to encourage women and children to embrace their bodies saw her named Australian of the Year at a ceremony in Canberra on Wednesday.

Her work, Embrace, has been shared within our School community—particularly as part of the three-session Raising Confident Girls seminar delivered at BGGS in 2018 as part of Associate Dean (Wellbeing), Dr Jody Forbes’, PhD research. This seminar was examined by supervisor, Associate Professor Zali Yager, who collaborated with Taryn for the Embrace Kids book.

Results indicated that following participating in Raising Confident Girls, mothers reported significantly greater:

  • body esteem
  • body appreciation
  • knowledge, confidence and skills parenting an adolescent girl
  • positive role modelling for daughter with respect to body image.

Embrace Kids brings together a vibrant collection of stories from young people, and well-known personalities, who share their experiences of typical adolescent concerns, such as body image, bullying, advocacy, and representation. View the trailer here.

Taryn will be joining us online after the screening to answer questions from parents.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for parents to come together with their daughters (and sons). Years 7 and 8 BGGS/BGS families can register their attendance to this event via Minerva: https://minerva.bggs.qld.edu.au/calendar/event/24588.
