On Wednesday at the Foundation Day Assembly, Service Captains, Simran Mackrani (12H) and Isabel Shorrock-Browne (12R), proudly announced Beddown as the 2022 School Charity.
Beddown activates and repurposes vacant spaces that are commonly used during the day, into pop-up accommodation, so that those who are sleeping rough have a safe bed to sleep in at night.
In supporting Beddown, we hope to confront the stigma of homelessness and understand the services required to improve the health and self-esteem of those impacted.
Current circumstances in Brisbane have meant that many who suffer a housing crisis, have lost their temporary accommodation—Beddown will be an invaluable resource to our community in the coming months.
Students have embraced the leadership opportunities presented in School Service. Several senior students have commenced community service, and the House Service Captains are currently determining their House Charities and supporting Year 10 students to establish their community service and contribution ideas for the year.
Service and Charity Group Leaders have welcomed existing and new members to the many and varied Service groups on offer in the Girls Grammar Co-curricular Program. New members are welcome any time throughout the year, students can find details such as Service group information, staff coordinators and meeting times and venues on the Minerva Service pages and in the Co-curricular Handbook.
I would like to congratulate Simran and Isabel on their enthusiastic start to the year, which is expressed so well in their motto, Generate Generosity.
