ASME QLD Young Composers’ Competition

The ASME Queensland Young Composers’ Competition is held annually and allows composers up to Year 12 to submit their compositions for critique. The pieces are judged by professional composers and musicians who also provide feedback with the contestants.

My original song, Paint Me Blue, placed second in the lower secondary division for songwriting; Tilly Joice (8G) received a highly commended with her piece, You’re Still Here, in the same division; and Lisa Walsham (11G) received a highly commended in the Upper Secondary Instrumental division for her piece, Grey Clouds.

At the awards ceremony, we were given the opportunity to participate in a workshop, How to create the ultimate suspenseful movie soundtrack, presented by John Hodder. We were then split into our competition divisions and provided with feedback. For the songwriting section, we were able to work with Mark Sholtez, who is an ARIA nominated Australian singer-songwriter. He provided us with some incredible feedback and songwriting tips. All in all, it was an incredible experience, and I will definitely be entering again next year. I highly recommend the competition to anyone that wants to try their hand at composing or songwriting.
