BGGS vs BGS in Friendly Fencing Competition

Fencing at Girls Grammar, like many other sports, had an unfortunate disruption in Term 1, and as a way to finish Term 3 and return to training, the fencing team visited Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) for a friendly competition. Girls were divided into Junior (Years 7 to 9) and Senior (Years 10 to 12) teams.

For most of the Year 7 team it was their first competition of any sort, and despite some initial nerves, the girls improved as the matches went on. The Year 8 team had the experience of last year’s fixtures, and used that and team unity, along with an understanding of how to use their opponents’ larger size, to handily win their match.

The senior teams had a slightly tougher time of things, with both the foil and epee teams competing against the BGS senior teams featuring more experienced fencers with considerable experience at state, national and international level. Despite this, the girls performed well and gained valuable experience against styles of fencing they don’t often compete against. This show of school spirit and support from our senior girls will help the development of younger players.

On Saturday, our BGGS Fencers will host All Hallows’ School in the McCrae Grassie Sports Centre in an additional friendly competition. We hope the girls enjoy this opportunity to test their skills in a competitive environment.
