Grammar Girls Dominate at Australian Rowing Championships

Grammar girls achieved outstanding results at last week’s 2021 Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington in Tasmania.

Five Year 12 students—Ellyn Hill (12H), Nancy Duncan-Banks (12E), Tylah Hutton (12B), Sophie Lucas (12O) and Emily Hirst (12G)—travelled to the championships with BGGS First VIII Coach, Mr Blaine Heseltine. Competing for their club—The University of Queensland—and racing in the Under 19 Division, the girls performed exceptionally well against some of the country’s best rowers.

Ellyn Hill (12H) and Rowing Captain, Nancy Duncan-Banks (12E), accomplished a feat rarely achieved at national regattas, winning the Under 19 Pair, the Under 19 Four and the Under 19 Eight. Tylah Hutton (12B) experienced similar success, rowing in the winning four and eight crews. Sophie Lucas (12O) won a silver medal in the Under 19 Four and was also a member of the winning Under 19 Eight. Emily Hirst (12G) joined fellow BGGS athletes in the Under 19 Eight, coxing the boat to a National Championship.

The magnitude of the girls’ achievements cannot be understated as they excelled at the most competitive rowing regatta in the country. The BGGS rowing community is very proud of the commitment and dedication our rowers have shown.

Well done, girls.
