In Week 1 of this term, approximately 70 students trialled for a place in a BGGS Tennis team. This year, we have seen great interest from Year 7 students—many of whom have been selected in Junior teams. Additionally, approximately 10 students from Year 7 have been a part of the Junior Development squad—a way to give some of our less experienced junior students skills and gameplay.
The Open and Senior A trials saw players compete for the title of School Tennis Champion in the annual Intramural Competition. The winner of this competition is awarded a prize on Speech Day. This prize was developed by Miss Milisent A Wilkinson, Headmistress 1900-1912, for ‘the use of the pupils … so that they may be able to become fine sportswomen and noted tennis players’. Congratulations to one of our Tennis Captains, Emma Armitage-Ho (12R), for winning the Intramural Tennis Competition.
Following discussions with current and past players, 2022 has seen the introduction of a new Tennis uniform. It is wonderful to see our girls playing in the new royal blue and navy skirt—a change from the white skirt of the past 20 years.
We are currently over halfway through the competition season for Tennis in 2022. Thankfully, it is shaping up to be a full season after COVID-19 disruptions over the past two years. This week we are heading to Clayfield College on Saturday morning. Additionally, our Junior C and Cii teams, and Senior B and Bii teams have been playing against each other during the week.
Round 8, Saturday 3 September, will see us at UQ Tennis for our final home games of the season against Moreton Bay College, Somerville House and BSHS. All players are reminded to bring along a plate of food to share as a part of our hosting morning tea. If there are any parents interested in assisting, by supervising the morning tea table, please make your way there on the day.
The End of Season lunch time celebration for students will be held on Wednesday 15 September at 1.05 pm. Students are invited to come along to celebrate the wonderful season that we have had, and to thank the Captains and Year 12 students for their commitment to BGGS Tennis.
Good luck for the rest of the season girls and keep up the hard work!
