Australian Football debuts in QGSSSA

After the success of last year’s Australian Football Gala in Term 4, the QGSSSA introduced a Senior competition for girls in Years 10 to 12. BGGS entered an Open Team, and what a season it was.

Head Coach, Mr Matt Beattie, hosted a shortened pre-season and taught the girls the basic skills, and instilled a sense of fun, in just a few training sessions.

The first week of fixtures was held at Springfield Central Sporting Complex, with the girls joined by AFLW players from both the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns teams. Our first fixture was against Somerville House and the team had a convincing 38—1 win, showing skills and game understanding far beyond their experience. For most of the girls, it was their first competitive game of Aussie Rules. Our second game of the day was against Brisbane State High School (BSHS) and it was a cliffhanger, with ruck, Coco Garton (11B), kicking a goal with five seconds remaining to defeat BSHS 24—21.

Unfortunately, the next two fixtures were abandoned due to South East Queensland’s flooding event. However, when the season recommenced, the girls descended on Metricon Stadium—home of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and the Gold Coast Suns—an experience they will never forget. Our first game was a tough battle up against a very strong St Peters team who took the win 36—21. The girls bounced back in their last game against Moreton Bay College with a great team performance built on solid defence (BGGS 20—MBC 9).

BGGS finished equal top of the table with three out of four wins.
