From the Music Department

Senior Instrumental Camp

Last weekend, 130 senior musicians attended the Senior Instrumental Camp. Thank you to the staff who worked tirelessly to make the weekend a great success and Music Captains, Rebecca Groves (12H) and Emily Yu (12O), for their leadership.

Choir Workshop Weekend

The Choir Workshop weekend for auditioned choirs will be held on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 February 2019 with the Chamber Singers, Grammar Singers and Encore engaged in rehearsals in preparation for the year ahead. Encore students will attend on Saturday only, Grammar Singers on Sunday only, and Chamber Singers on Saturday and Sunday. Full details of each choir’s schedule will be posted on Parent Portal.

Music Welcome and Information Evening

All families new to the Music Department are invited to attend the Welcome to New Families Concert on Friday 22 February 2019. The concert and presentation will be in the Band Room of the Cherrell Hirst Creative Learning Centre commencing at 6 pm. The purpose of the evening is to meet music staff, gain firsthand knowledge of the workings of the department and hear senior ensembles perform. Complimentary pre-concert refreshments will be available from 5.30 pm.

Intermediate Band Workshops

A workshop for Wind Symphony will be held on Tuesday 19 February and Chamber Winds on Wednesday 20 March to accelerate the skills for the intermediate bands. A concert presentation will follow each workshop at 6 pm in the Band Room. Parents are invited to attend their daughter’s concert presentation.

Intermediate and Junior String Workshops

A workshop has been organised for Saturday 2 March 2019 for the intermediate and junior strings groups. Albinoni Strings, Bartok Strings, Copland Strings and Dvorak Strings will be involved. Each group will spend the day advancing their individual and ensemble skills. The day will conclude with a short performance for parents. As this is the only performance for these ensembles this term, it is important for all girls to make the commitment for the day. The full schedule will be available on the Parent Portal and students will receive an email containing event details.

International Women’s Day Concert

On Friday 8 March 2019, the Music Department will showcase musical items composed by women from around the globe to celebrate International Women’s Day. A highlight of the evening will be the premier performances of three commissioned works by contemporary Australian female composers. Ms Natalie Williams has been commissioned to compose for Combined Strings and her piece Hildegard’s Daughters will be presented along with composer Ms Alice Chance’s commissioned work Taraxum, to be performed by the Chorale, and Unbelonging by Ms Ellen Kirkwood, written for the Big Band.

As the new Director of Music, I extend my thanks to the Girls Grammar community for welcoming me so warmly. I look forward to an inspiring and exciting year of music-making and learning.
